Life's circumstances have an interesting way of bringing us to our goals. I find myself an Advocate for the rights of children and their families, a Family Services Worker and a Hospital Spokesperson.

I am appalled that despite efforts to elicit change, Ministries continue to operate upon archaic premise whereby families are forced into inhumane 'choice'. Families offered access to funding of supports and services, but in exchange must relinquish guardianship in order to help their loved one.

Reporting entities such as the Office of the Child Advocate must be able to respond to situations distinctly to achieve transparent and viable outcome. We need more journalists willing to educate the Public on issues to force accountability. This is not a challenge subject to Provincial boundary, but manifests widely across Canada, the United States and abroad.

I encourage others to take action to preserve families of children; particularly those with disabilities intact. Family-centred Care must be prioritized and solidified by review of current Policy which is often counter-productive in its vision towards individuals with disability. If we are able to salvage the lives and core values of families who are already facing tremendous strain with the diagnosis of developmental disability - and/or medical issues - we offer this model to others whole-heartedly in celebration of the life of our beautiful little girl who is now an angel.

Please share amended Alberta's Legislation within your own jurisdictions. The Amendment effected in AB can serve as legal precedence in neighbouring Provinces.

Statistically, current report indicates that the numbers of children under Ministry Direction are not only alarming, but staggering: "1 in 100 children in Alberta are in care".

Sadly experience finds that families of children with disabilities across Canada - and abroad - too are
plagued by archaic, biased legislation that contributes to the collapse and harm of vulnerable individuals. Articles arise daily indicating the deficits within the Province of Alberta alone.

Due to the long-standing circumstances surrounding our family, an Amendment to Legislation was finally effected in December 2006 to the Family Support for Children with Disabilities Act (FSCD) of Alberta:

Section 2-3, Manual Amendments: Policy and Procedures in Family Centred Supports and Services:

"The Family Support for Children with Disabilities Program to have separate legislation from that of child protection services."
